The Benefits of Polyurea Garage Floor Coating

Why We Promote It Over Epoxy

Epoxy may be one of the most popular flooring products and is certainly well known. In the face of this, why would we go against the grain and choose Polyurea consistently over epoxy coating options? As professionals, we are dedicated, first and foremost, to providing the best products to our clients. After years of experience working with epoxy coating, we have seen time and time again that when compared to Polyurea, epoxy just doesn’t hold up. Whether we are talking about durability, longevity, or appearance, Polyurea consistently blows the competition out of the water.

Polyurea is roughly quadruple the strength of the normal epoxy coating. What makes it stronger is not specifically its inherent strength (although it is strong) but its flexibility. Epoxy is effectively a rigid material that sits on top of concrete. As weight and temperatures shift the concrete underneath, the epoxy becomes unstable and, eventually, cracks and falters. Polyurea, on the other hand, is able to move and shift with the concrete to accommodate changes in weight and temperature, which frequently happen in the context of our garages. This is why Polyurea has been trusted in military and industrial applications for years and why many concrete coating professionals prefer it to epoxy. Compared to other substances, Polyurea has minimal to non-existent upkeep requirements and a longer lifespan, making it far superior to epoxy for commercial and residential garages.

Polyurea, once fully cured, is extremely resistant to chipping and peeling. This is also a result of its development and usage in more industrial environments that can not afford for their flooring to be prone to damage and breaking. In your home, this translates to the fact that your flooring will be able to withstand anything you (or your family and pets) can throw at it!

Polyurea can be applied in a variety of colors, allowing you to customize the look of your garage according to your own taste. We offer a variety of chip options that you can add to your installation, each of which brings a unique and bright appearance to your garage floor coating in Austin.

Just as the name implies, our one-day floors are able to fully cure within 24 hours, meaning that we can perform the entire service within a single day. Compare that with Epoxy flooring, which can take up to 7 days to fully cure, and the preferable choice becomes clear.

Add an additional fifteen years onto any initial warranty with our fifteen-year residual warranty. This means that for the next fifteen years, we will come out and touch up any areas of your flooring that may have been damaged at no additional cost to you.

Our flooring is designed for high-traffic areas that require easy maintenance. Just a quick sweep and mop with any standard cleaning agent will have your floors looking like new again in no time. Additionally, Polyurea is resistant to most staining, meaning that you won’t have to worry about spills and other mishaps.

Our floors are treated with an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold, mildew, and fungi. This is perfect for areas where cleanliness is a must, such as restaurants, hospitals, and schools, which have historically been one of the most prominent applications for polyurea flooring. While you may not be eating off your garage floor, these factors do mean that the polyurea coating will be free of fungus or bacterial development. It also means that you can be relatively confident that any spills will not cause long-term staining or become a breeding ground for mold or mildew.

Possibly one of the best features of Polyurea is that the substance is slip resistant. No matter what the conditions are, our floors will provide a safe and stable surface for you and your family. While no surface can be slip-proof, Polyurea can certainly give you a better chance than other surfaces, particularly in the circumstances with wet flooring.

Our Easy 6-Step Installation Process

What To Expect During A One-Day Installation

STEP 1

Preparation

Possibly the most important step, preparing your garage floor for a polyurea coating, is crucial to the success of the project. First, we’ll need to assess the condition of your concrete for damages. After, we’ll thoroughly clean the floor to remove any dirt, grease, or other contaminants. Additional preparations include shot blasting and/or diamond grinding, and dust is minimized by having all grinders hooked up to vacuum systems.

STEP 2

Reconstruction

After the floor has been prepared, we can begin concrete reconstruction. This is necessary if there are any cracks or damage in the floor. We’ll repair those before proceeding with the coating. Penntek menders and fillers are used to fix pits and cracks before the coating process begins. The goal is to ensure that the concrete itself is sound and steady before we put any coatings on top of the structure.

STEP 3

Basecoat

The base coat is the first layer of epoxy that’s applied to the floor, done in a single layer. It’s important to have a smooth, even surface before moving forward with the next steps. Penntek’s 100% solids, self-priming pure polyurea basecoat is mixed and applied. We can use a trowel to apply the base coat evenly across the floor, making sure that the entire surface is covered with the layer before proceeding.

STEP 4

Broadcasting The Chip

After the base coat has been applied, we’ll broadcast the chips evenly across the surface by hand. We do it this way to ensure that the coating is distributed evenly and to ensure that there’s a good amount of chips in each area. Once the chips are broadcast, we’ll roll them into the base coat with a roller to make sure they’ve properly adhered. The chips come in a variety of colors, so you can choose the look that you want for your floor.

STEP 5

Scraping The Chip

Once the base coat is fully cured, the floor is scraped and vacuumed to remove loose or vertical standing flakes. This is done to ensure that the final product has a smooth finish without any sharp edges or uneven texture. These chips will be visible through the top layer, so it is important that their application is even and complete. There will be an opportunity for our clients to personalize their floors through a wide array of chip colors.

STEP 6

Applying The Topcoat

The final step is to roll out the UV-stable polyaspartic clear coat. The topcoat is then applied via roller in a similar manner as the basecoat, effectively sandwiching the chippings between two layers of polyurea coating. This final coat, once cured, is what gives that satisfyingly glass-like finish to your flooring. And with the fast-drying Polyurea, it won’t be long before you can fully enjoy your renovated garage.

Project 1

Here we applied a classic polyurea coating to the flooring of the garage and the wrap-around staircase leading up to the home. These clients requested a speckling from our Evolution line, and our team worked to ensure seamless application throughout the garage surface and up the steps.

Project 2

These clients were also seeking a seamless polyurea application over their garage flooring and up the corner steps. A goal here was to cover any signs of wear and tear on the original concrete, and we think you’ll agree that our team did an excellent job. The clients chose a light gray base with a mid-tone slate stone speckling, also from our Evolution line.
